Life Experiences

I was raised on a small arm in the San Joaquin Valley. My earliest memories are of wandering the fields and creeks with a fishing pole and gun in hand. By age ten my work duties included driving tractor, irrigating and helping in the grain harvest. On a family farm what some today would think was child labor is just an accepted part of life. Back in the 1950's I was making $2 a day for a ten hour day and thinking I was getting rich. By the time I was able to drive I was making $2 an hour and saving everything I could for college. After high school I attended Humboldt State College and eventually graduated with a degree in Geography. During those years I held jobs in farm work, manufacturing, and was self employed in making wood products. In 1974 I moved to Wallowa County and began a career in the timber industry which lasted over thirty years. During these years I also held second jobs in construction, ranch work, thinning and forest management, and running winter trap lines. During these years I also returned to college and received a degree in education. After considering the cut in pay that would have been sustained to become a teacher the decision was made to continue falling timber.

Hobbies

Having a keen interest in nature at an early age, hunting and fishing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Game and fish has been a part of my diet from day one and continues to be to this day. As a young boy I would make bows from willow branches and arrows from old shingles. I continue today making self bows (from one piece of wood), strings from elk sinew, arrows from split tamarack, and arrowheads from obsidian. Gardening has always been a love of mine and provides a large part of our diet. I also continue to run winter trap lines, and manage the furbearers on several ranches.
